The Tug Hill Commission in sponsoring a webinar entitled “Rise of Cemetery Abandonment: Legal Responsibilities & Obstacles for Towns & Villages” on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 4 pm to 6 pm.
Our speaker is David Fleming, Jr., COO, Featherstonhaugh, Wiley & Clyne, LLP. David is widely recognized as a state expert in cemetery regulation and management, having represented cemetery organizations, including many of NY’s largest cemeteries, since 1995. Over more than 20 years of advocating cemetery interests, David has negotiated significant changes in cemetery policy in NY which are now utilized as national models for cemetery regulation.
In an era of tax caps and shrinking revenue, the last thing a town or village wants to do is become a cemetery operator. As many municipalities are now learning the hard way, that is exactly what state law and circumstances may require them to do. In this session, options to help communities deal with this new responsibility or perhaps in preventing cemetery abandonments will be discussed.
